27-Jul-2001 -- I had been in Breckenridge, Texas on business on a hot
Friday afternoon, and decided that I would conquer N33/W99
this time. A previous try, from the north and without a
GPS, had been foiled by locked gates. This time, I was
determined!
My initial approach was again from the north, down a fair
dirt road that led to several oil wells and a ranch, all
still behind locked gates. I circled around on about three
miles of good dirt/gravel roads to a point 0.49 mile SE of
the point I wanted. A large pipe corner on the fence there
provided easy, non-barbed-wire access to an open pasture
with a few old signs of bovine inhabitation. I hiked through
knee-high grass, with prickly pear cactus and some mesquite
trees, and up a gradual incline into a grove of mesquite.
A very brief confluence dance got me to all zeros on the
ETrex, right beneath a power line leading to the pumping
units on the wells slightly west of me. I got my photos, and
headed back to the pickup just in time to hear Frank Zappa
and the Mothers of Invention sing the musical saga of
Nanook and the Deadly Yellow Snow. A fitting climax to
another excellent adventure!
