07-Nov-2001 -- Roger Kehm (KØROG) and Clem Tucker (NØRFS) had to be in Watertown, SD to take care of some Amateur Radio business. There being some free time during the day, we decided to document DCP Site--45N-98W (8.3 miles NE of Doland, Spink County, SD). We drove from Watertown to the site--arriving there about 10AM. It being pheasant hunting season in SD, many crop and pasture fields were fenced & posted prohibiting hunting as well as trespassing. The site field was fenced with barb wire but not posted. We were in luck for there was no farm house for several miles if we had had to seek permission.

The day was overcast and hazy--temperature about 55 F with a slight breeze from the south around 5-10 MPH. The field was pasture/grazing land with a shallow dry creek meandering near the site. We were able to park the vehicle on the gravel road about 900 feet directly west of the site. It was a very easy walk--taking less than 10 minutes in & back to the vehicle. We spent about 30 minutes at the site taking pictures & doing the documentation. We were using 2 different makes of GPS's & they agreed very closely.

Picture #3 -- At 45N-98W looking north with the camera tripod at the site. The trees in the background were probably a former farm site with the buildings now gone. The shallow creek is evident in the picture & also showed up well on the DCP satellite photo on the web site.

Picture #4 -- Looking west. (About 900 feet to the "zoomed in" vehicle). Good cattle grazing land with rich abundant grass.

Picture #6 -- At the site, the tripod, rich grass, & in the Dakota/Lakota Native American tradition, a bit of sweet sage to assure success of the venture. And as it was cattle country, a reasonably fresh cow pie marking 45N-98W.
