05-Aug-2000 -- From maps, this confluence looked
like it'd be easy to visit. It lies within Babcock State Park, just a
short distance across a creek from a park road. In reality, though, (i)
the park road is a long narrow dirt road (see photo #1) that's rather
difficult to drive, and (ii) the 'creek' is at the bottom of a steep
gorge (that apparently runs into the famous New River Gorge). Photo #2
shows a view down towards the creek from the dirt road. Infuriatingly,
this is less than 700 ft from the confluence.
With light fading, I wasn't up to a treacherous hike down a steep
bank, followed by a possibly difficult creek crossing, more hiking up
the bank on the other side - and then doing the reverse. However, I
hope someone's able to reach this confluence someday. A piece of advice
for anyone attempting this: Make sure your GPS receiver has a good
antenna, because satellite reception in the gorge is likely to be
sketchy.
