23-Jul-2002 -- After the last day of the Swedish Off-Road-Tour in Kiruna, I took the Northland Road 45 in direction to the Finnish boarder to Karesuando.

Subsequently, I was driving on the E8 on my way to the Kilpisjärvi lake, the outmost north-western region of Finnland. Starting from this point, there are a lot of gorgeous hiking trails within the largest mountain area of Finland. So I, too, was able to enjoy this beautiful landscape on my way to the confluence point 69°N-21°E which can be started directly at the 69 latitude (see photo no.4 ). This is Finlands highest Confluence-Point on Level 888 Meters (photo no 5). There are approximately 5km distance between the starting point and the confluence point and ascends from 500m to 800m within the first kilometer. In Finnish, “Vaara” means mountain.

The confluence point is located on top of the mountain which is called “Ailakkavaara”. During my 2,5 hours way back, I enjoyed the terrific view over the Kilpisjärvi lake and the surrounding mountains. It was a dry and cloudy day with 15°C. Another beautiful hiking trail which I was walking for training the day before, leads through the Malla-Nationalpark for 11km to the boundary stone of the three countries Finnland, Sweden and Norway (see photo no. 6).

By the way, the largest and most difficult annual canoe-race in the world is taking place at the Kilpisjärvi lake. It is running over 500km until Tornio. More information about this area you will find under: www.enontekio.fi

Nach dem Abschlußtag der Schweden Off-Road-Tour in Kiruna, fuhr ich über die Nordland Strecke 45 in Richtung Karesuando zur finnischen Grenze. Danach weiter auf der E8 in Richtung Kilpisjärvi, die äußerste nordwestlichste Ecke Finnlands. Von hier aus starten viele herrliche Wanderwege in Finnlands größtes Fjäll-Gebiet.

So verlief auch meine Tour zum Kreuzungspunkt 69N-21E, den man direkt am 69 Breitengrad starten kann (siehe Foto Nr.4 ). Das ist Finnlands höchster Confluence-Punkt auf > Meereshöhe 888 Meter.(siehe Foto Nr.5) Der Punkt ist ca. 5km entfernt und steigt innerhalb des ersten Kilometers von 500m auf 800m an. Der Name des Berges, auf dessen Höhengebieten sich der Schnittpunkt befindet, heißt Ailakkavaara. Vaara bedeutet in der samischen Sprache Berg. Bei meinem 2,5h Rückweg genoß ich den herrlichen Ausblick auf den Kilpisjärvi-See und die umliegenden Berge, bei trockenem Wetter, bewölktem Himmel und 15C°. Eine ebenfalls schöne Wander-strecke, die ich am Tag zuvor als Training zurückgelegt hatte, führt über 11km durch den Malla-Nationalpark zum 3-Länder Grenzstein.

Ein interessanter geographischer Punkt zwischen Finnland, Schweden und Norwegen (siehe Bild Nr.6 ). Hier, am Kipisjärvi, startet auch das längste und härteste Kanu-Rennen der Welt. Das „Arctic Canoe Race“ über 500km nach Tomio. Mehr Informationen über dieses Gebiet unter: www.enontekio.fi
