(visited by Curt Christiansen and Roger Lauritzin)
30-Apr-2002 -- After a one day rest (see 46N106W and 47N105W) in Hazelton, N.D. at my in-laws' I was restless so I took off headed south on US 83 in to South Dakota. US 83 merges with US 12 and where they split I took 12 east to SD 47 and turned due south. Passing through Hoven I took photos of the National Historic Landmark "Cathedral on the Prairie" (pic6). Heading further south I turned east on US 212 and drove to Faulkton, S.D.. From the local Texaco I called my parents in Alaska to ask my dad about the farm near here where he had been born. They have yet to locate the exact spot but did tell me that his cousin Laura Lee Lauritzen and her husband Roger lived a block or so from where I was calling. They had been to my wedding the year before in Hazelton so I went over to say hi and tell them what I was doing. Roger is retired and decided to accompany me to the confluence point and, if necessary, clear the way with the landowner since Roger would likely know them. The confluence was easily reachable in a pasture, just off a good gravel road. Roger said that there should be a large stone marking the spot and sure enough we found a stone (pic5) within 10’ of where my GPS said the spot would be. I took photos of the surrounding area including a grain elevator in the distance to the southeast (pic2). After leaving the confluence we visited the home where my great-grandparents farmed but were unsuccessful in attempting to locate the farm my grandpa rented in ’35 when my father was born, maybe next trip! |
