#1: View to the east.

(visited by Jack Frickey)

10-Aug-2002 -- The confluence at 40N 115W is another of those places out in the middle of the Nevada desert with nothing but sagebrush for local scenery. The route we took was the same as the previous visitor (G. Horn), from US 93 on NV 35 through the historic community of Cherry Creek and north on the continuation road. We went a little north of 40N then west to the road that goes south and passes quite near the confluence. Shortly after turning west we observed the bleached white bones of a cow (presumably) that did not survive the rigors of desert living. (see photo #5)

I parked Emma (my Explorer) at about .2 miles from the confluence. Jan, who was nursing a broken ankle, remained with Emma while I walked the short distance west to the confluence. The sagebrush was low and not particularly dense so I didn't bother with hiking boots or long pants. Curiously, there was a yellow marking flag near, but not at, the confluence. Being wide open desert, getting all zeros on the GPSR was quite easy (photo #6) with a Garmin EPE of just 12 feet. The view to the east (photo #1) shows the mountain range we crossed just west of Cherry Creek and beside which we traveled in getting here. Photo #2 is looking south back down the valley we had just traveled from Cherry Creek. The Ruby Mountains to the west are in the background of photo #3. Photo #4 is the view to the north.
