22-Jul-2000 -- My discovery of the Degree Confluence Project
was almost perfectly timed with the arrival of my new GPS in the mail. So on
Saturday July 22, 2000, I convinced Ram to join me wandering around the woods
as we found our first confluence.
46N 123W was almost disappointingly easy to get to. After studying some
maps we drove out to the general area, and found a forest access road that
seemed to head in the right direction. A few miles later we found a good place
to park the car only a half mile from the confluence and set out on foot. Much to
my surprise the road continued on our course, and we barely had to leave it at
all. In fact, the confluence was very near the intersection of two access roads --
we could have just driven the whole way.
All in all, it was a great excuse to get outside and explore for a while, but
next time I'll have to pick out a more difficult destination.
