04-Apr-2003 -- The morning was a mild 5 degrees celsius as John and I departed Bear Cove and headed up the Viking Trail on Newfoundland's Great Northern Peninsula. A wispy fog was moving in off the Strait of Belle Isle and the sky was cloudy, but St Margaret Bay was still under a heavy ice cover. This was our 'ace in the sleeve'.

We followed the Reefs Harbour road for about 7.5 kilometers off the Viking Trail and parked near Ray's Lounge, just a few kilometers from Reefs Harbour.

I donned snowshoes and John his skis for the short trek to the N51 W57 confluence. The snow was melting and the bay ice slush-covered. There were numerous cracks in the ice through which the salty green waters oozed, but it was still safe to walk on.

Having previously entered the N51 W57 waypoint, I followed a 'goto' on the gps map screen. Less than 30 meters out on the ice we pinpointed the confluence as the gps 'zeroed out' and indicated the point - within a 6 meter error. The time, exactly 11 am.

In the waters of Saint Margaret Bay, about 60 m from shore.
