20-Jun-2003 --
Drove from Oslo(60N 10.4E) the night before and camped close to 62N 8E (secondary).
Had intended to make a try on that one, but we decided it still was too
much snow in the mountains (the confluence is at 1350 meters).
So after a nice visit to Dalsnibba overlooking Geiranger some 1500 meters
below and a visit to the Geocache there we headed for 62N 7E. Passed
dramatic and beautiful scenery through Strynefjell, along Strynevannet
and Hornindal, with the deepest lake of Europa, Hornindalsvatnet 514 m.
deep. When passing Strynevatnet the GPSr said we where only 6 km. from the
confluence, but it was on the other side of the lake and a lot of tall
mountains. Though, from the place we parked our car there is a track back to
Strynevatnet, 'Flovegen', so it is possible to approach from that side as
well, but it will add 6-7 km. to the walking distance.
Anyway, we parked close to the farm Vollset at 350 meters, between the
mountains Middagsnibba (1531) and Storhammaren (1585). The GPSr said 2.5
km. but it was impossible to follow a straight course. We started out at
ca. 14:00, followed a
singletrack from the valley to a point close to Fedalssætra, climbing
350 metres in less than 2 km. From there we scrambled through boulder
areas, vaded a small (cold) river and passed several snow-covered areas.
The confluence itself is situated on the eastern side of the valley
Fedalen, a small closed valley, with some small waterfalls coming down
from the mountains around, view to a small glacier to the SW, and a small
lake called Storvatnet (ironically translates to Large Lake).
In the middle of a boulder field we found the point, and the strenous
climb were forgotten when we got all zeroes on the GPSr.
Made a small cairn on the spot, and put in a small box with the URL and
our names. The round trip totaled up to 9 km. and moving time of about 5
hours. On the return trip a nice rainbow appeared on the other side of
the walley below.
In the area surrounding the confluence there is a lot of fantastic
sites and sights. Already mentioned Dalsnibba overlooking Geiranger,
The famous Geirangerfjorden itself, Strynevatnet, Strynefjellsvegen etc...
We returned to the main roads of 'Sogn og Fjordane' county, passing
Hornindalsvatnet again and taking the main route towards Volda, but
stopping in Bjørkedalen for the night before attacking the next
confluence(62N 6E), not far from Laurdalssætra.
