20-Oct-2000 -- It seems like Fridays are so slow in
coming around but it's finally here. We have the motor home all loaded
and ready to head out to Vienna, Ga. Why Vienna? Well for fun and an
excuse to hit the road. I judge Memphis In May BBQ contests. There is
one almost every weekend of the year. I try to do one every couple of
months. The one in Vienna is always a lot of fun.
Anyway, a check of my confluence map shows a couple that should be
easily accessible. I was particularly attracted to 31n 35w, this being
a "tri-state" confluence at the corner of Fla., GA. and AL.
We left Pensacola at around 8:AM on I10 to Marianna then North on 71 to
SR2 that turns into SR 91 when you cross into GA. at the Chattahoochee
River. 1.8 miles beyond the river turn north on River Rd. for 1.5 miles.
At 31 00.182N 84 58.939W turn west on a dirt road. This road will
dead-end at a fence with a gate. The gate was not locked but secured
with a small chain and snap clip. Inside the fence is a large pasture
with about a 3-acre pond and a very handsome herd of cows. The cows
looked friendly enough so I let myself in and proceeded toward the
pond. At this point I could see a truck down by the pond along with two
men. I approached the gentlemen and introduced myself. I learned that
one of the gentlemen was Mr. Lewis, the owner. I explained to him what
I was doing on his property with a camera and a GPS. I was surprised
that he did not seem the least bit surprised at my quest. He said,
"The spot you're looking for is right up there on the top of that
hill just past that dead tree." He said that if I wanted he'd be
glad to show me or I could drive by vehicle over there. I told him I
had a motor home and I had better walk. He continued that it would be
quite all right to drive to the spot. He said, "You won't bother
them cows." Then he added. "There was another fella here last
year that wanted to go over there." This explained why he wasn't
more surprised at what I was up to. At this I went back and got the
motor home and drove to the location that he pointed out. The target
turned out to be .25 miles due west of the spot that Mr. Lewis pointed
out. The cows know exactly where the confluence is located. There is a
well-worn cow trail leading to the target. So, all worked out well, I
logged another confluence and Mary Jo logged another new bird. A
"Tanager" I believe.
