02-Nov-2003 -- Zu Beginn unserer Chile-Reise wollten wir den tiefen Süden mit seiner phantastischen Berg-und Gletscherwelt kennenlernen. So fuhren wir nach unserer Ankunft in Punta Arenas die Ruta 9 Richtung Norden und machten einen Abstecher zur Pinguinkolonie am Seno Otway.

Dort angekommen, zeigte sich nur etwa ein halbes Dutzend Magellanpinguine, deren Hauptverband offenbar gerade auf Fischfang war. Dafür wurden wir mit der Anwesenheit eines Stinktiers und eines Fuchses beehrt. Dann ging es wieder auf die 9 in Richtung Puerto Natales durch den Westen des kleineren chilenischen Teils der riesigen patagonischen Ebenen, die sich bis zum Atlantik erstrecken. Laut unserer Karte musste 52S 72W sehr nahe an der Straße ca. 30 km vor Puerto Natales liegen. Da wir mit einer 18-köpfigen Reisegruppe unterwegs waren und wenig Zeit für „Sonderaktionen“ blieb, war dies ohnehin Voraussetzung für einen erfolgreichen Besuch. Wenige Kilometer vor dem CP liegt das Hotel Rubens, ein malerisches Gebäude in der dort typischen Holzbauweise. Dort machten wir einen Stop um eine Tasse Kaffe oder einen Imbiss zu nehmen. Das Hotel hat schon Besucher aus aller Herren Länder beherbergt, wofür der Beweis in Form unzähliger Aufkleber an den Fenstern zu finden war.

Der Punkt selbst liegt dichter an der Ruta 9 als erhofft, nur ca. 30 m östlich der Strasse, was den Besuch erheblich beschleunigte. Über einen niedrigen Zaun steigen und die restlichen Meter über eine Wiese zu laufen war in 1 Minute erledigt.

Bemerkenswert, dass nach über 7 Jahren DCP ein unbesuchter Punkt existierte an dem so viele Menschen aus der ganzen Welt so nahe vorbeigekommen sind!

At the beginning of our Chile-Tour, we wanted to experience the deep south with its fantastic mountains and glaciers. So we headed after our arrival in Punta Arenas north on the Ruta 9 and made a trip to the penguin-colony at the Seno Otway.

Arriving there we had to realize, that only half a dozen Magellan-penguins were present, while the main body of that colony was obviously fishing. Nevertheless we were honoured by the appearance of a skunk and a fox. Then we went back on track towards Puerto Natales all through the western part of the smaller Chilenian part of the huge Patagonian plains reaching far out to the Atlantic Ocean. According to our map 52S72W had to be located near the road about 30 km from Puerto Natales.

As we were travelling organized with a party of 18 and little time was left for “special tasks” this was a necessary condition for a successful visit. A few kilometres from the point lies the Hotel Rubens a picturesque building in the typical wooden construction. There we made a stop for a coffee or snack. This Hotel has sheltered people from all over the world, as to be proofed by the innumerable labels on the front windows.

The CP itself lies closer to the Ruta 9 as hoped for only 30 m east of the road, speeding up the whole undertaking significantly. Climbing over a low fence and walking the little distance over a meadow was a thing of a minute. Remarkable, that after more than 7 years of the DCP a confluence was unvisited where so many people from around the globe must have come so near!
