01-Jun-2003 -- While working at the Tatalina Long Range Radar Station I realized that 66N154W was right down the road just outside of the village of Takotna. I headed off to Takotna the evening of June 1st, 2003. I traveled the gravel road that leads from Sterling Landing to Ophir across the Takotna River. I went through the community of Takotna and past the airfield and onto what I construed to be a portion of the Iditarod Trail. From the USGS map it appears that the Iditarod trail intersects with the confluence. I ventured as far into the forest as I felt comfortable. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service was in the area relocating bears to more northern locales so I was bit skittish about being alone, in the forest, at dusk, without any means of protection. After getting within less than a kilometer of the confluence I decided to turn back and try to bag it another day. I intend to return during the summer of 2004 to complete the confluence.
