#1: Confluence in rice field seen from the road in the north

(visited by Hans Augdoppler and Hans Penn)

14-Feb-2004 -- From our current domicile in Gwangyang/Jeollanam-do (N 34,93666°; E 127,72734°) we headed east on this cold Saturday afternoon. Even well prepared with a new road map and the description from our predecessor we faced some problems to follow the planned route, probably arising from inability to read the Korean names of the towns and villages.

First we parked about 370m north of the CP(Picture 1) to walk downhill the direct line. But soon we realized that this was too difficult. We continued to a parking bay close to the village east of the CP (Picture 6). From there it was a short walk along rice paddy fields.

We targeted the famous power line pylon and to obtain the ZERO reading (Picture 7) a few meters to the north (Picture 8) was easy since the paddy field was dry. As the sun disappeared the weather turned to be quite cold intensified by a chilling northerly wind. Now we walked to the car as fast as possible by using another shortcut south of the village (Picture 7)(Picture 8).

On our return to Gwangyang home it started snowing and the surrounding mountains already had a white cap. It is nice to have a well heated shelter in Kumho-dong.
