17-Apr-2004 -- A family visit to the confluence this time! Continuing in a westerly direction after 48N 17E and 48N 16E we had to travel quite a bit further for this one. As the crow flies or as the GPS indicates this confluence (middle point of Austria) was 96.5km from our home.

Anyway we parked about 1.4km away next to the strange piece of modern art? and walked along the path following the signs to the meridian stone. Before getting to it from the direction we approached the real (WGS 84) confluence was found. Altitude of the confluence registered as 417m.

As previous visitors have stated the Meridian stone is not at the point itself (using WGS 84 grid reference) but what surprised me is that it isn´t even on the point in the Austrian grid reference! See the montage in picture 9 I´ve not used the Austrian grid before but the co-ordinates of the Meridian Stone were very close to the correct ones 47°59´59.9´´N, 14°59´59.2´´E although why the GPS seemed to think this was 108m from the point 48N 15E I don´t know unless it matters the grid reference in use when a coordinate is marked! Must look at the GPS manual more closely.

After a brief rest it was back to the car and home to Wien!
