08-Aug-2004 -- Sunday morning, it is 9:45 am. Armin and myself were leaving confluence 8N 6E en route to confluence 8N 5E. We followed the A123 from Aiyetoro to Isanlu, Egba, Ilofa to Omu Aran. Outside Omu Aran, on the way to Ora, we parked the vehicle and off-loaded the bikes, changed into our biking gear, and off we went.
For approximately 20 km we drove on very bad tarred and dirt roads through wide areas of rainforest, passing occasionally a maize field. We drove through Ora with only a couple of kms to go. The rainforest got thicker and thicker and the chances to arrive at the Confluence grew slimmer and slimmer. We found a freshly graded forest track into the rainforest. This track must have been graded in the morning or the previous day, as the leaves and tracks were still fresh. It lead us as close as 50 metres to the Confluence - how lucky can someone get!
The last 50 metres were extremely tough and we went through the undergrowth to the Confluence, which took us 30 minutes. The last 10 metres of undergrowth became sparse and we finally arrived at the Confluence at 1:15 pm completely exhausted.
Very happily we returned to our vehicle, loaded the bikes and drove back the same way stopping at Obajana to collect Armin's glasses that he had forgotten earlier that morning at the accommodation. After an eventful day we were back in Abuja by 7:30 pm.
