07-Nov-2004 -- Since 1917 the 7th of November has been a holiday to commemorate the Great Revolution in the USSR and then in Russia. Though this year we seem to have celebrated it for the last time - the holiday is going to be abolished, like many things connected with our "red" past. Nevertheless we had 3 days off and could not waste them sticking indoors. So we arranged a 3-day trip to the Smolensk region. The aims were to take several CPs, to visit various places of interest and to visit Tim's grandmom Zina, who lives in the town of Gagarin (before 1961 it was called Gzhatsk after the river Gzhat').

Gagarin is the native town of the fisrt cosmonaut of the world - Yuri Gagarin, he spent here his school years, and here's the house where the first cosmonaut lived.

In the morning we started to the settlement of Vysokoe. In the past it was an estate of Count Sheremetiev. Even destroyed, the church, the residence and lots of other buildings (outhouses for servants, stables etc.) impressed us much. Now we can only imagine what a beautiful and peaceful place it was 130 years ago.

On our way to Vysokoe we absolutely unexpectedly ran into an "air temple" and another estate, the estate of the Muromtsevs as local people told us. It is also a huge traditional residence, with a park, nowaday almost destroyed. The house was decorated with refined stucco moulding and the family coat of arms can still be distinguished on one of the walls. The family church is about 100m away from the house, not in perfect condition, but working. Nevertheless in general the view of Russian estates of 18-10th centuries is rather depressing... But the former grandeur still hasn't vanished.

Meantime it was already about 3p.m. and we planned to take the point N56E36. We drove towards the village of Vasilevka, according to the description from the site it was about 3.5km from this village to the point. The asphalted road soon became a country one, we reduced speed. The sun was setting, but we still drove by hunting forests and deserted villages. At last the sign Vasilevka appeared steadfast and firm, we turned on 4WD road which actually was a muddy mash and successfully stuck in it :)) We couldn't get out by ourselves no matter how hard we tried. In an hour it was pitch darkness, out of it two men with axes, scratched their heads and advised us to ask a timber lorry for help. In another hour we heard an engine roar. It was a dumptruck KAMAZ - our saviour, it pulled us out. The driver gave us a piece of advice not to drive further and in general not to drive here unless it is hot summer weather. We think we'll follow his advice and come back to Vasilevka in summer.
