26-Dez-2004 -- O nosso grupo constituido por onze pessoas utilizando 4 carros 4x4 saiu de Luanda no dia 18 Dezembro, tendo começado a descer a costa de Angola até ao Namibe onde chegamos no dia 22 depois de termos pernoitado nas praias de Equimina e atravessado os morros da Lucira. No dia 23 partimos para SW em direção a Tambor e Omauha onde estivemos até 26 e aproveitando para preparar e verificar tudo de modo a podermos atingir com sucesso os nossos objetivos programados:

• Objetivo 1 - Visitarmos o ponto de confluência designado por nós como 17-12, ou seja, 17º00'00.0"S 12º00'00.0"E.
• Objetivo 2 - A partir da foz do rio Cunene subir ao longo da costa do deserto do Namibe e chegar à vila do Tombwa.

Para atingirmos estes objetivos com sucesso, necessitavamos de abastecimentos e combustivel para 4 dias de viagem pelas planícies e zonas desertas do Iona seguidas do deserto do Namibe; 300 Litros de gasoil, 150 Litros de gasolina, 200 Litros de agua, comida para onze pessoas, etc, etc.

No dia 26 saimos para Sul em direção ao Iona e, em seguida ao ponto de confluência 17-12. O piso era bastante duro e com muita pedra, buracos e ravinas, que embora não fossem nada de especial obrigava-nos a uma atenção constante e a um esforço muito grande para os carros que iam bastante carregados e acrescido das temperaturas bastante altas, 41ºC de temperatura ambiente, 64ºC temperatura do solo.

Cerca das 16.45 horas perdemos o trilho que vinhamos seguindo e surgiram-nos vários trilhos que talvez devido ao vento eram pouco definidos mas que nos levaram a subir até cerca de 400 metros de altitude tendo em seguida descido ligeiramente para 300 metros e andando sempre para Oeste na direção do ponto de confluência. O terreno continuou a ser bastante dificil mas plano facilitando o nosso andamento, até atingirmos o objetivo 17-12.

Fizemos as fotos da praxe e recomeçamos a andar, desta vez em direção à margem do rio Cunene e onde tinhamos programado a nossa paragem. As pessoas estavam todas bem, aos carros fizemos uma revisão cuidadosa porque a próxima etapa não permitia falhas devido ao tipo de terreno e aos tempos que teriamos que respeitar. Grande parte da costa do deserto do Namibe fica submersa durante as marés altas e as dunas junto ao mar têm cerca de 40 metros de altura ao longo de 40 km.

Dia 28 recomeçamos a nossa viagem, primeiro em direção à foz do rio Cunene e de seguida os 155 km da costa do deserto do Namibe. Aqui o nosso andamento era muito mais lento devido ao piso de areia muito solta e ao enorme esforço dos carros cuja peso continuava praticamente o mesmo. Para percorrermos os 68 km desse primeiro dia demoramos cerca de quatro horas e às 15 horas resolvemos parar em frente à Baía dos Tigres para pernoitar. Muito vento, muita areia no ar, na comida e em tudo, mas uma paisagem única.

No dia seguinte fizemos o percurso restante e chegamos, sem problemas de maior, ao Tombwa, cerca das 13 horas. Algumas pequenas avarias mas todos satisfeitos. Conhecemos mais um pouco deste grandioso país que é Angola.

26-Dec-2004 -- Our group, eleven people using four 4x4s, left Luanda on December 18 moving south along the coast of Angola until Namibe where we arrived on the 22^nd. On the way we stayed overnight at the beaches of Equimina and crossed the hills of Lucira. On the 23^rd, we left for Tambor and Omauha where we were until the 26^th, and taking advantage of this, we prepared everything to be able to succeed on our programmed objectives:

• Objective 1 - Visit the confluence point designated by us as 17-12, in other words, 17S 12E.
• Objective 2 - Starting from the delta of the river Cunene a drive along the coast of the desert of Namibe until we arrive at the villa of Tombwa.

In order to reach these objectives successfully we needed provisions and fuel for 4 days of trip on the plains and deserted zones of Iona, followed by the desert of Namibe: 300 liters of diesel, 150 liters of gasoline, 200 liters of water, food for eleven people, etc, etc.

On the 26^th we left in direction of Iona and the confluence point 17S 12E. The ground was quite hard and with lots of stone, holes and cracks, which made us cautious and required a big effort from the cars that where quite loaded. The ambient temperature was 41ºC with 64ºC above the ground.

At about 16:45 we lost the tracks that we were following, other tracks could be seen but were not well defined, perhaps due to wind erosion. We climbed to 400 m, then slightly down to 300 m, always moving west towards the confluence point. The terrain continued to be quite difficult but flat, which facilitated our course, until we reached the objective 17S 12E.

We took the photos and resumed our journey, this time in direction to the Cunene river delta, where we had programmed our next stop. The whole group was fine and we made a careful revision to the cars because the next stage didn't allow flaws due to the land conditions and the schedule that we would have to meet. Great part of the coast of the desert of Namibe is submerged during high tide and the dunes close to the sea have about 40 meters of height along 40 km of shore.

On the 28^th we resumed our trip, first in direction to the Cunene delta and then followed the 155 km of coast of the Namibe desert. Here our course was much slower due to the sand that is very loose, and to the enormous stress on the cars whose weight was practically the same. Our travel of 68 km on the first day was delayed by four hours, and at 3 p.m. we decided to stop in front of Baía dos Tigres (Tigers' Bay) to stay overnight. A lot of wind, a lot of sand in the air, in the food and in everything, but a unique landscape.

The following day we made the remaining distance and arrived, without big problems, into Tombwa close to 1:00 p.m. Some small mishaps but all were satisfied. We now know a little more of this great country that is Angola.
