#1: location of 66N-20W from 84 m facing southwest

(visited by Thomas Barthel and Dirk Dölz)

03-Sep-2023 --

During a two week road-trip through Iceland together with a friend of mine, I took the chance to visit the some confluence points.

We came from south, from the city of Saudarkrokur, along the road no. 73 and took a junction to the north, on road no. 745 "Skagavegur". Soon we reached the coast of the Skagafjordúr again, which has several very impressive cliffs. Only 700 m beeline from the confluence point we found a good parking place and set off by foot. I carried my swimming trunks and towels with me, because I read the report of former visits. It was before noon and still very cold. The thermometer showed 7 degrees. After a slightly rise we saw the two ponds with the confluence point located in the one behind. Two whooper swans flew off from the foremost one. After walking some 110 m at the bank of the confluence lake we reached the closest distance to the confluence point, which was shown with 29 m on the GPS. Now I changed and started my way to the confluence inside the lake. After passing the stony margin area I reached muddy ground, which gave me more stability to keep balance. Now I could take the necessary pictures at the confluence point 66°N-20°W. Despite the bad weather conditions with stormy winds and a thick cloud cover, I was able to take a picture of all the zeros of the coordinates, while Dirk has taken a picture of mine! Only after more than one hour I could feel my toes again! Short after this confluence visit we reached the northernmost point of our trip at latitude 66°7' north. Only some 15 km further along the coast and under stormy conditions, we saw Iceland horses and reached the fabulous basalt columns at the lighthouse of Kálfshamarsvík in a mystic landscape.

This was my ninth visit of a confluence point during a trip through Iceland. For sure it was my "coldest" visit ever!
