#1: The Confluence from 20 m distance

(visited by Rainer Mautz and Marcus & Olga)

06-Sep-2017 -- This is the 6th out of 9 reports reaching confluence points during a one-week cycling trip around Ireland. The story starts at 54°N 7°W and continues from 53°N 9°W.

By coincidence, my friends Marcus and Olga were spending their vacation at the same time in Ireland as I did. Since their vacation home was at the South Coast in Union Hall, this was the nearest confluence point and we agreed to meet up there.

In the morning I had started cycling from Limerick. In the afternoon I reached the confluence area. Before I met my friends, I visited St. John’s Well 2.3 km north of the confluence point. Then we met at the gate of the currently closed Millstreet Country Park in 1.3 km distance.

We decided to directly start hiking from the park entrance. First we walked along a minor road and then along the ridge between a forest and a field. For the last 100 m we descended to the confluence point, which is on a slope with hassocks and moss. From the confluence there is a far view into the lowlands and if the weather had been clear, the coast might have been visible. Marcus and Olga managed to keep their feet dry, but I didn’t while wearing sandals.

For the return, we opted for the beeline-approach. This meant hiking a little more uphill, but was significantly quicker and easier. We then cramped my bicycle in the car and went for a great dinner in the nearby town Macroom. We spent the night in the huge holiday home in Union Hall.
