06-Jul-2024 -- This is the 1st out of 10 reports visiting confluence points during a 10-day bicycle trip from Rovaniemi to the Norwegian Sea and back.
On this Friday evening I arrived by airplane at the airport of Rovaniemi. This small airport is an excellent starting point for travelling to the North Cape. However, all passengers had their luggage been delivered, but my bicycle box had not. There was no staff around to ask. So I filled out the lost-baggage-report and wanted to leave already, when I finally found a staff member of the airport. When I asked her for my bicycle box, she simply said: “Oh, we forgot this one in the elevator”. Now I could set up my bike and start riding northwards. I spent the night in a hostal between the airport and the town center.
The next morning, I started cycling northwards from the “Santa Claus Town Rovaniemi” and reached the confluence point around 10 AM. The exact location was 220 m inside a forest from a small asphalted road. I thought that there is no need to pack a rucksack for such a short distance. But this turned out to be a misjudgement. As long as I was walking, I was OK, but when I stood still to take the documentary of the confluence, all the mosquitoes within 1 km distance had reached me and begun to suck my blood. Every picture you see here had cost me at least 3 mosquito bites. For all future confluence walks, I would take along my mosquito net and long pants.
