25-Nov-2005 -- CASI CAMBIAMOS DE LUGAR UNA CONFLUENCIA

25-Nov-2005 -- WE ALMOST CHANGED THE LOCATION OF A CONFLUENCE

Once we had finished “harvesting potatoes” in the 38°S 58°W, a long connection path to General Madariaga waited for us. The enthusiasm of the successful chain of visits made us savor other conquests. Yes, we were big-headed and we trusted ourselves to reach the last three confluences.

We saw “La Brava” lagoon, Vivoratá town, Mar Chiquita lagoon, the abandoned stations of Nahuel Rucá Macedo y Juancho, and the southern access of “Salada Grande” lagoon, driving by unpaved and not very used roads. Everything was being easy for us, the GPS-Confluence distance was decreasing quickly and, the best of all was the fact that the target was faraway of the swampy boundaries of Salada Grande lagoon.

Once we were at 400 metres of the confluence, we parked the car, jumped a new fence and tasted another successful visit. The distance to the objective decreased as we walked towards it: 384, 322, 290, 258, 192, 124, 100, 82, 65, 32, 20, 12, 8, 4, 2, 0 !!!!!!!!. We arrived but…did we???

The coordinates didn’t have as many zeros as we were waiting to see: when we started moving to reach integer numbers, the distance to the waypoint 37S 57W was increasing inexplicably. We couldn’t understand the phenomena; it had always gone right.

After spinning round and round, we realised what was the problem: the supposed destiny waypoint, was loaded wrongly, and actually, we were 2 km from the confluence. Once we located the real place, it pointed to the unwanted zone of lagoons and swamps…

Unconsciously we had tried to avoid entering in the swamps.

We started all over again. We got in the 4x4 and retried the approach to the now evasive confluence. This time, the minimum approximation was of 1400 metres, with many swamps and lagoons in the way; the day was very hot, because it was midday. We parked again, put on our boots, took some water bottles and started walking, or to say it better, wading, to the confluence.

We passed over three lagoons taking advantage of an old fence hidden among the clump of rushes; the boots weren’t enough protection and were suddenly full of water, because the level was higher than our knees. It was becoming very hard for us to advance, but we reached a plain that seemed to contain the confluence. Nevertheless, its edges were at 600 metres of the target, so there was a big and hard-to-wade lagoon between the confluence and us.

When we supposed our visit to be incomplete, looking through the rushes, an enbankment that remind us of Moisés opening the Red Sea to let the Hebrews’ escape from the Pharao appeared in front of us: it pointed in straight line to the target, so we continued. Pablito said: “Let’s hope Moisés doesn’t close it…”

We crossed the lagoon and reached 250 metres of country. It looked as we had the confluence now at hand. We walked quickly but we were tricked again: at 150 metres, we found another lagoon’s edge, with a closed wall of rushes. We waited, but Moisés didn’t open it for us again. We asked ourselves what to do, and both of us said at the same time: “We’re already here, so we’re not gonna let it go away!”.

We entered in the clump and put ourselves under the GPS control, as we could hardly see each other. Not without effort, we advanced more and more until we entered in the 100-metres circle that made the visit successful. We had the water over our knees and it was really hot, but we got a bit closer: 99 metres from the confluence.

It was enough for us, we had reached the fourth confluence of the trip. If someone want to see all the zeros, he’s already advised to come with an appropriate equipment and with ready to get wet.

This time it hadn’t been easy to take the photos because we were a bit scared of falling into the water and break the electronics; we were glad and proud of what we had done: then there was only one target left in the province.

The return wasn’t easy, as we were dead tired and our boots were full of water, but we were still enthusiastic at the idea of finding the last one.

We were very close to Pinamar, so before continuing the hunting, we decided to go to the sea just to refresh ourselves a bit, and then have a decent lunch somewhere near the beach. We had to prepare for the success of visiting all the earth confluences in Buenos Aires: There we go for 37°S 58°W !!!!
