06-Aug-2023 -- This is my ‘local’ Degree Confluence Point - the closest point to my home in the San Francisco Bay Area. I have visited it many times (many more times, in fact, than the three visits that I’ve recorded on this site). But I was intrigued by George Pepper and Jan Bentley’s recent report that described an old monument - using the old NAD27 datum - that had been installed near this point. I had never seen or heard of this before. So I had to revisit the point, to find this monument, and document - for future visitors - its (WGS84) coordinates.
But first I decided to revisit the ‘official’, WGS84 Degree Confluence point, which lies on top of a redwood stump, high up the hillside.
Then - after resetting my GPS receiver to use the NAD27 datum - I went looking for the NAD27 monument. To my surprise, I found it much farther down the hill, very close to the baseball field at the bottom. The WGS84 coordinates of the monument are [36.99999,-122.00113], 97 meters West of the true (WGS84) Degree Confluence Point.
