#1: The point is somewhere on that mountain

(visited by Babak Gholizadeh, Reza Roudnehin and Sepide Masoudinejad)

29-May-2006 -- After we had got to 36N 50E and saw how easy that was, we just planned to visit another point. We found that there were two reachable points to the West and to the South. But as the southern one seemed to be 15 km away from any road, we choose the western one, which is located near Abhar, a town SW of Zanjān. As I said, we went to the point directly from 36N 50E and this is not the normal route. The normal route should be something like Qazvīn > Tākestān > Abhar > to the point. Instead, we went west from 36N 50E along side roads crossing each other and passing small villages. The land here is fertile and you can see people everywhere working in farms and gardens.

After almost two hours, we reached the main road going from Qazvīn to Zanjān. We arrived at Abhar, which is a medium city in Zanjān Province, and here all the people speak Azari. The point is almost 30 km southeast of the city through mountains. The road was beautiful and passed through small mountains and sand hills. We stopped by the road in a village called Dowlatābād for lunch. We made a small fire and grilled sausages on natural wooden sticks cut from trees right there.

As we went along the road, we found that our distance to the point was almost constant at 10 km - the road was going around the point. On the road we met two survey engineers making maps for telephone lines. So we got a local road map and found that there was a small side road going north, which could take us closer to the point. After we had passed a village called Yengī Kand, we saw that a bridge had fallen into a river and workers were working on it. The only choice was getting to the point on foot or by motorcycle. As it was 6 p.m. in the evening, it was going to be dark soon and also the point seemed to be between mountains and would need hours to reach it. So we decided to end the journey here. We were as close as 9 km to the point, as our GPS showed us.
