26-Jun-2021 --

26-Jun-2021 --

Saturday, June 26, I made a second attempt to visit 17S 42W confluence. As I cited in the previous attempt narrative, the major hardness of this confluence is the final 180 meters, which is by a very dense and thorny forest. I followed the three recommendations that I had made in the previous narrative, that are to wear thick gloves, to wear long sleeve shirt and to make the new attempt in the dry season, hoping that, in this time, I would be more successful.

I and my wife left our home in Montes Claros city about 7:30 and made the same way that I had made in the previous attempt, with the difference that, in this time, instead of stopping to have lunch at Araçuaí city, we opted to only take a snack when passing by Salinas city. We faced the dirt road, which looked me in better condition than in the previous visit, considering the fact that, in the previous narrative, I had written that the road “was in very poor condition, with extremely steep ascends, in which the car had a lot of hardness to win”. At now, there was a leg of dirt road paved with stones. I don’t remember if there was this paved leg in the previous opportunity, but I think that there wasn’t, because there was other leg in works of paving. I stopped the car at the same place than in the previous attempt, where my wife stayed waiting.

I started the hiking by the same way as the previous attempt, up to arrive at the edge of the dense forest, 180 meters to the exact point. I wore the long sleeve shirt and the gloves, which were indispensable to face the thorns. These two recommendations were very important, but the third one, that is, to schedule the new attempt in the dry season, was useless. I had had the hope that, in the dry season, the forest wouldn’t be as dense as in the rain season, but the hardness was the same.

In this time, equipped with long sleeve shirt and gloves, I managed to enter in the forest, but, even so the pace of the hike was extremely slow. There was the necessity to remove all branches with the hands, in order to enter each meter. There was yet the problem of liana that was rolling up my waist and my legs, and that must be removed in order to go ahead. As cited, the long sleeved shirt and the gloves protected the hands and the arms, but I still scratched my ear and my wrist.

To my luck, after about 30 meters hiking in the forest, I found a gully, covered by stones, but almost free of forest, which follows almost in the direction to the confluence. I entered in it and managed to hike quicker, although facing the hardness of the steep descend with the stones. Across the gully, I managed to go up to less than 100 meters to the exact point. I was already in the limit of DCP rules. But, to finish, I left the gully and hike some more meters by the forest, up to 85 meters to the exact point, where I registered the visit. To go up to the exact point would demand a huge additional effort.

After the visit, I made all the way back, very tired, and arrived at the car after 3 hours hiking. We made all the way back to Salinas city, where we arrived a bit after the night had fallen.

We spent the night at Salinas and, in the following day, we made the way back to Montes Claros.
