23-Apr-2001 -- I found this web site after reading through a USA Today last week and decided I might be able to find a confluence during my weekly commute to SC from my home in FL.
I scanned the available spots and found that 31N 82W was available and only 32.8 mi from my home. About 5:30 pm on Apr. 23 I headed up the road to SC with the intention of seeing how close I could get to the spot. Once on 301 north I crossed the GA/FL border and headed for Newell. I didn't realize that the only sign for this community is a spray painted piece of plywood so my next stop was at the Winokur Community sign. I doubled back and turned on my GPS. At what looked like the bend in the road that appears on the map, I found a logging road and a gate. The gate had a no hunting, fishing, or trespassing sign posted by the "Warren Island Hunt Club". I knew I was at the right spot. The only problem was about 3.5 mi and not a lot of daylight remaining. I took a closer look at the locks and to my delight one of them was not latched. It took me about 10 seconds to decide to go for it (I figured it is turkey hunting season and most people go hunting early in the morning). The rest was easy as long as I didn't get bogged down in the sand. I was in and out in less than 15 minutes with my first confluence.
Note from the project: Trespassing on posted land is not the recommended approach. Please try to get permission to cross posted land.
