26-Aug-2024 -- As we were on a long anticipated trip to England, and as the trip included history, geography, architecture, books, and landscapes, a confluence visit seemed like the perfect capstone. And thus one fine August morning found us touring the beautiful villages and country roads of Somerset. After traveling slowly through towns with great names like Wrantage, we made it to Lillesdon Lane just east of the point.
First, we stopped at the house closest to the point, to the northeast of it. The very kind person there said we need to stop at the farmhouse, which was a bit further north-northeast of the point. We left the house, drove a bit north, and once at the farmhouse, had a very nice chat with the landowners. They knew what we were talking about and very graciously allowed us access into their field. They even let us park in their driveway. We walked past some beautiful horses they keep there and some enormous pumpkins that seemed to be doing very well until we emerged into the fields containing the confluence point, where we were treated to an amazing vista to the south.
Upon walking down slope to the southwest, we realized that the point would actually be in the next pasture; we reached it a few minutes later. It was a glorious day. It was late morning in late summer. The temperature stood at 69° F or 21° C with light winds. The sun was shining through some puffy clouds and the trees were swaying in the light wind. And we were together. What a fantastic combination. We saw a few birds; some sheep stood in the distance. It is not surprising that this point has been visited so many times as it is very easy to access and the landowners are very friendly. Still, I would kindly recommend all future visitors contacting the landowner before entering their property.
This was my first confluence in England in at least a decade, and it was great to be back. I have quite a few points in the UK after 20 years of trekking. This was my first visited point in Europe since last year in northern Germany. I took photos and posted the video here: 51 North Latitude, 3 West Longitude. Because we were parked in the landowner's driveway, and wanting to be sensitive to their time, we only spent 5 minutes on site. We then walked out the way we came in; having one more friendly chat with the landowners. I very gingerly backed out being fairly new to shifting with my left hand and driving on the left hand side of the road. But all went well and no people, property, or animals were harmed in the process!
Our next stop was the magnificent Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol designed in the 19th Century by Brunel, followed by a hike in the beautiful Cotswolds. It was a great day. Get out there and explore the world!
