14-Jul-2018 -- In the "golden" jungle

Along the peaks of the Golden Altei - across Altyn-Köl (Western Siberia - Russia) and along the legendary Austrian Road in East Kazakhstan we return to the Tian Shan Mountains of Kyrgyzstan to catch a glimpse of the majestic Khan Tegri. This continues the story of 52°N 86°E

Altyn-Köl - the Altaic name sounds mysterious and is also a true description: The "Golden Lake" breaks through the surrounding green, forested, jagged mountain ridges like a navy-blue mirror. As little brother of Baikal Lake Teletskoye shows up as shining pearl of Altai. It was worth getting up at 5 o'clock. The Toyo embarks backwards while early fog at pier no. 4 lifts slowly. The name of the small ferry 'Восток' (Russian: east) says it all: Eastward and then by a sharp turn southwards it pushes the pontoon 70 km across the lake. At the onboard picnic site, a bunch of motocyclist cook their soup on a UFO-like, foldable, wind-stable outdoor cooker (of course no CE mark). 6 1/2 hours are over far too quickly, landing directly on the beach of the Tschulyschman delta. Tschulyschman valley is popular with Russian outdoor tourists - campsites and dacha resorts alternate with calm gravel banks and rocky foaming sections. In between sometimes a sign of a rafting agency. We leave the beautiful place behind because next highlight is waiting at the end of the valley: A pass adventure that has made it to famous website dangerousroads.com: “Katu-Jaryk Pass - one of the scariest roads in the world” – maybe if there are avalanches or landslides. So the navigator enjoys relaxed the sight of the oncoming "Russian bread" (Buchanka).

The evening before, we had finished the second confluence of the day: The road from Gorno Altaisk to Artybash winds like an endless gray millipede through the dark green Altai treetops. Two kilometres before the Verkh-Biysk pass we park the Toyo at the roadside and stumble through the thick undergrowth. Siberian larch, birch, spruce, fir and Siberian “cedars” (pine) form a light jungle roof. The confluence lies in the middle of the magical yellow-green of a high fern thicket. The residents thank for the visit with a big bulge at the elbow result from an insect bite. As compensation, the fairies send us a rainbow over our night camp on the banks of the river Biya.
