#1: 19S 19E - On the spot

(visited by Patrick Consani, Simon Conradie, Lasea de Beer and Corne Vermaak)

18-Oct-2005 -- This Confluence was logged as one of our activities during the Overland Challenge finals of 2005. Eight teams made it to the final round, which was an overland trip from Beira on the East coast to Swakopmund on the West coast of Africa, and a whole lot in-between. This was the second Confluence visited on this trip, the first having been 15S 35E, which is in Malawi. The trip took us through six countries over 16 days. Many thanks to the organisers and teams of the Overland Challenge finals 2005 for this opportunity.

As this confluence point was close to our course of this particular day in northeastern Namibia, we decided to visit it. Unfortunately, this confluence point is on restricted land, thus the closest that we could get to this point by vehicle was approximately 500 m. The rest was a walk in wild bushveld.

Due to this being a restricted area, only two of the eight teams did the walk to the actual confluence point. At the actual point were Patrick Consani, Simon Conradie, Corne Vermaak, and Lasea de Beer. But this was done on behalf of the entire group, as we all had a part in getting us to this point: Patrick Consani, Simon Conradie, Lasea de Beer, Corne Vermaak, Roland Bergh, Mark Kurzewski, Robert Consani, Tommy Freeborough, Japie Mare, Kobus Theron, Ben Theron, Annie Mare, Adri Swanepoel, Kobus Swanepoel, Vossie Vorster, Yvonne Vorster, Anton Matthee and Kobie van Heerden

The walk was made interesting by the encounter with wild bush pigs and Kudu deer. The point was visited at midday where the temperature peaked to 40° Celsius.
