25-Nov-2005 -- COSECHANDO PAPAS

25-Nov-2005 -- HARVESTING POTATOES

After our nocturnal visit to 38°S 59°W , the previous visitors said that the next one was a confluence with an “easy” access: the 38°S 58°W, which was located in the middle of a field where potatoes were harvested. We got up early in the morning, had breakfast in the hotel and, in presence of a great sunny and clear day, we got in the 4x4 and headed towards our third confluence.

Balcarce’s zone’s very beautiful, as it’s full of rocky hills covered by fertile lands with a variety of crops, and it makes on the whole a fantastic coloured mosaic. The way we had chosen to reach the confluence is the unpaved one to “La Brava” lagoon, that borns in the very centre of Balcarce, continuing quietly through the hills and harvested fields, up and down by soft valleys.

Enjoying the rural landscapes, we got easily with the vehicle very close to the confluence: about 250 metres. As usual, we were separated from it by a fence. Our target was there in the middle of a potatoes’ field that seemed recently harvested, so we tried not to ruin it by walking carefully.

To be there was like being inside a painting: faraway there was a tractor ploughing, a wheat field aside, black earth turned over… We entered and took the habitual photos, leaving the place as perfect as we found it by putting the GPS softly on a furrow.

Pablito couldn’t help entering inside the wheat field, that, with the blowing wind looked as a sea full of soft green waves .

We had already caught the first three confluences, so we decided to put on our way to look for a difficult one: the unexplored 37°S 57°W which was in the General Madariaga’s swamps, near Pinamar.
