#1: 360-degree panorama from the spot

(visited by Terje Mathisen)

16-Apr-2007 -- Drove from SeaTac airport very early (ca. 05:30), sunrise was at 06:20 and I arrived & parked nearby the confluence around 06:30. I followed Eric Lincoln's excellent description when deciding upon the route to take.

Getting to the turnoff spot was very easy in these days with good maps (Garmin) and good gps coverage, I simply drove past the point of closest approach to the point (about 120 m away, so just too far to able to claim a visit while still in the car!), turned around on the next possible U-turn area, then came back and parked as close to the turnoff as I could, which turned out to be about 170 m due west.

From there I simply walked back along the road to get a little closer, then started to cut through the relatively dense forest. Since this was in early Spring, the undergrowth wasn't nearly as bad as described in Mike Blaszczak's first visit narrative, and I found the proper zero-zero spot within just 6 minutes.

The 30-m tall canopy did make it a bit hard to get even my SirfSTAR III-based Garmin 76CSx to settle down exactly on the all-zero point, and the only photo I took of it turned out to be out of focus, so I've included both the track log and a relatively sharp image I got from about 2 m away. This image shows that it was tracking 9 regular gps satellites at the time, and attempting to lock on the WAAS signals from the geostationary sat #48.
