02-Mar-2008 --

2008 Ireland Tour

Patience IS a virtue.

Continued from 55N-07W

It would appear that since the only other visit here back in September 2000 the village has grown somewhat. Housing now goes up to within about 600 yards or so of the CP. There is a lovely house directly to the East of the CP, not actually mentioned by the only other visitor.

01-Mar-08 - Since it appeared that the CP lay on their land, but I couldn't be sure without crossing it I went and knocked on the door. I was asked to come back the following morning to ask the man of the house for permission.

02-Mar-08 - Before I left last night I tried coming at the CP from the west, and got to 55N 06d 00m 03.4s. Calculations subsequent to getting home indicate this to be 60m from the CP so technically it was done. Of course I wasn't going to leave it at that.

As I turned back up the private road I noticed something I had missed the previous evening. There was the East field next to the house, the West field I went into, but also a MIDDLE field I had missed! Hmmm...

Anyhow having come this far I went and spoke with the landowner to seek permission. Seems the house has been there for about 90 years and was the home of the manager of the former quarry. Funny the previous report makes no mention...

I set off across the field and right up to the dry stone wall topped with barbed wire, turns out the CP is in the middle field after all. Hop over the wall and march to the spot.

While I am admiring and documenting the views the Garmin is busy averaging away. What you can't see in the view to the East is Scotland and 55N 05W which I have also visited. A quick calculation shows the horizon to be just under 19 miles away. The distance between the two is 39.6 miles so you'll need to get to just over 1000 feet high.

Again after collecting samples for some 15 minutes or so, I have achieved slightly or actually tremendously more accurate data than the previous visitor. Height 235 feet, but what about accuracy? - 3.6 feet. Less than I can stretch my arms apart....

There is still time (just about) to go and try for 55N-08W and a clean sweep, so detouring - as the direct road was closed - via the giants causeway, off we go.

Continued at 55N-08W.
