I’m very surprised to see that this CP hasn’t been visited more often. It’s a very accessible CP in that there is a dirt road on the left just after crossing over Box Canyon heading west. The dirt road takes you around the western side of Box Canyon where you can park at the southern end of Box Canyon. The southern end of Box Canyon from Hwy 60 is about a third of a mile. Or you can continue south on this dirt road until you see a small dry wash that heads west. The small dry wash from Hwy 60 might be a half mile.
I opted to park my car at the bridge that crosses Hwy 60 so that I could walk through Box Canyon entering from the northern side. It’s not a very large canyon but it has many natural caves. Although the caves don’t go in the mountain very deep, many of them you can stand up in. I walked through the canyon, past the parking area and headed south on the dirt road until I got to the small dry wash that headed west. I followed the dry wash up and located the CP about a third of a mile due west on the south side of the dry wash halfway up the hillside. The pictures that I took were taken about 25 yards south of the CP so that I could get a bit higher up on the hillside so as to get a better shot of the surrounding area.
I took the required photos and then hung out for a little bit before retracing my route back to the car. Total distance was 2.3 miles. Messing around in Box Canyon inside the caves was fun. As I said, the ones that I visited weren’t very deep.
