07-Nov-2009 -- Confluence visit number 2 for me and I am again playing it safe with a local confluence, just two hours drive from home. But having visited this area many times, I can say that I have never been down the road that leads to this find.
Turning off the main road just outside of Newstead, I find myself on a gravel road with smallholdings and larger grazing land for sheep mostly. The way was guided by the routefinder on our Mio Pocket PC, whilst keeping an eye on the distance to travel on the handheld. It is still 12Kms to go and the road leads me through dense native forest areas and over a hillside until finally I reach the spot on the road closest to the point, just 400 metres away into a field with some dried up dams and many grazing sheep.
I make my way to the confluence and find that the point is half way up the slope of a large half full Dam with many sheep gathered. They soon set off in the opposite direction when they see me coming. The view North will look a strange one as it does not show anything over the top of the hillside, but I have included a view further up the dam side showing the sheep. I also include the obligatory GPS shots and views towards the other three points on the compass.
The day was hot for the time of year, it reached 30 degrees (celsius), but the walk back to the car was not far. All in all a great drive out and another confluence to add to 38S 144E (my first).
