#1: The Confluence from 15 m distance

(visited by Rainer Mautz)

26-Oct-2014 -- This is the second out of 2 reports reaching confluence points in Austria and Slovakia. The story continues from 48°N 17°E.

I started cycling in the morning at 6 AM from the town Sládkovičovo, which is located in 35 km (beeline) distance. The direct route would be via the village Vlčany. But Vlčany is separated from the Confluence by the Váh river. The maps show a ferry across the river, but due to the flooding and the bad experience I had had the previous day, I opted to make a deviation and cross the river at the town Šaľa.

The Confluence is located on the Danubian Lowland, 1.8 km from the banks of the Váh River and 2 km north of the village Zemné. A little asphalt road passes the cemetery of Zemné and shortly after, the minimal distance of 500 m between the road and the Confluence is reached.

The GPS pointer pointed exactly along a high fence that separate a corn and a winter wheat field. The crucial question was, on which side was the Confluence? If I was guessing wrong, I would have had to walk an additional kilometre. I choose the side of the wheat field – and was luckily correct. Walking along the fence is possible without stepping into the field. The confluence point is about 3 m into the field. The pictures give the impression of a sunny day. In fact, these were the only 2 minutes of that day that the sun had come out. Prior to the confluence visit it was foggy and after the visit the sky was overcast.

After the documentation I cycled further to Gyor in Hungary and then back to Vienna, where I caught the night train to Zurich.
