#1: The confluence

(visited by fricskaresz)

19-Jan-2015 -- I started my hiking tour just after sunrise around 10 am from Arjeplog, a small town about 7.5 km north of the confluence. I took a snowmobile path and followed it to the shore of lake Navejaure. The tracks on the lake were frozen-slushy and there was a lot of water on the ice under the snow, too, so I decided to go over to the road at the hill-side to the east. It was just a few hundred meters away, but it was quite exhausting to make my way in the deep, fresh snow even with the snow-shoes.

I followed the road for a few kilometers and at the point where I was nearest to the confluence (cca. 450m) I turned into the woods again. A few minutes later I saw a moose coming from the direction of the confluence and I decided to follow his path thinking he might have much more experience to choose the best path in the very deep snow.

After a while the moose’s track turned sharply to the right so I left it heading straight for the confluence. When got there a few minutes later the moose tracks crossed my way again, exactly at the point the digits on my GPS turn to “all zero”!

The sun was already setting so I quickly took the photos and started to struggle back to the road in the deep snow following my own tracks. This half of a kilometer took more half an hour again. The way back to Arjeplog was a rather sporty walk in the slowly darkening nightfall.
