#1: The Confluence from 15 m distance

(visited by Rainer Mautz)

04-Sep-2017 -- This is the 4th out of 9 reports reaching confluence points during a one-week cycling trip around Ireland. The story starts at 54°N 7°W and continues from 54°N 9°W.

The morning was unpleasant for a cycle with cold rains and gusty winds. In Mallaranny (30 km from the confluence), I had to escape inside due to the horizontal rain. After spending an hour in the supermarket (which was the only shelter in town) the weather improved a bit and I continued cycling towards Achill Island where this confluence point is located.

The location of this confluence point is quite unique. It is in the Doogort East Bog – a large peat area with no roads or tracks – apart from one single road which misses the confluence by 60 m only. I abandoned my bicycle at 150 m (due to the roughness of the road) and walked slightly uphill to the exact location. Since the ground consists of water soaked peat I jumped from tussock to tussock trying to keep my feet dry.

The confluence is covered with grass, scattered flowers, and some little rocks. Since the point is quite elevated, there is a good view into the bay area and to the nearby Golden Beach. This view from 2 km distance shows that behind the smaller Eastern Dugort, there is a higher mountain (the Western Dugort) which cannot be seen from the confluence point.

I backtracked the same route back since there is only one road to Achill Island. Back to Newbridge I began to find my way southwards.
