#1: The Confluence from 10 m distance

(visited by Rainer Mautz)

10-Nov-2017 -- This is the first out of 3 reports reaching confluence points during a 4-day cycling trip from Rome to Benevento. This was my 114th cycling trip. With 500 km of cycling, it is my 60th-longest trip. See an overview here. About half of the trips included confluence visits.

The evening before confluence day I landed at Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport located 30 km west of Rome. After unboxing my bicycle, I spent the night in the nearby suburb Ostia. The next morning, I started cycling towards the confluence point: First I had to cycle through Rome during the morning rush-hour. This was a crazy experiment which I would not repeat. I saw 4 accidents!

At noon time I reached the village Roviano which is located 2 kilometres from the confluence on the other side of the Aniene River valley which separates the hill-top town with the confluence.

Previous visits had never approached the confluence closer than 50 m. But since I do not read the report of previous visits beforehand, I didn’t expect any difficulties. The confluence is located on a steep forested mountain grade. But the satellite image showed some traces of a nearby track, which I followed until I was just 50 m from the confluence. From there, a footpath leads to the exact location. The footpath is a little hidden and winds up in serpentines avoiding the big rock-stairs.

The confluence is surrounded by various species of trees. But nevertheless, there is a good view into the Aniene Valley.

I continued cycling over the 1220 m high pass “Valico Monte Bove” and spent the night in the town Avezzano.
