13-Sep-2018 -- This is the first out of 3 reports reaching confluence points in Italy’s regions Umbria, Marche, and Emilia-Romagna. During my 4-day bicycle trip, I planned to visit 4 points that I hadn’t visited yet. But I underestimated the steepness of the Apennines such that I ended up visiting only 3 confluences.
Wednesday after work at 3:25 PM I took a 70 minutes delayed train from Zurich to Milano. Again, I was able to fit my bicycle in the normal luggage space after demounting the wheel fork and fitting the whole thing in a bike-bag. My second train, the high-speed train brought me within 2 hours to Florence and a regional train to Arezzo. Due to the delay, I couldn’t reach my planned destination and had to spend the night in Arezzo.
The next morning I took another regional train to my planned starting point Chiusi-chianciano Terme. This little town is just 3 km west of this confluence point and was therefore a perfect starting point. From the country road SR71, it is 600 m to the confluence. A small road brings the confluence hunter up to 80 m distance. I parked my bicycle and walked along a fenced area of a farm towards the confluence point. The point itself is outside the fenced area about 20 m into a forest with young oak trees.
However, the dog of the farm started barking (as it did before according to previous reports). And on my way back the owner came out to see what is going on. Although he knows about the confluence point, it might be best to take another approach to the confluence that doesn’t rise the dog’s attention.
After my visit I started my real bicycle trip. First I passed Lago Trasimeno in 15 km distance, then Perugia and at lunch time the interesting town Assisi.
