#1: The Confluence from 20 m distance

(visited by Rainer Mautz, Elionora and Babadir)

11-Feb-2019 -- This is the second out of 3 reports reaching two new confluence points during our one-week trip to Sudan. The story continues from 15°N 33°E.

We spent two hours for having lunch in the village Saʿdānat al-Ḥalāwīn (سعدانه الحلاوين). There is no rush in Sudan, especially when being invited into a private house. When we finally set of at 2 PM, I had already given up attempting a second point. But our driver and Magnolia seemed to be fine with another visit – even though I had warned them that we would return very late in the night to Khartoum.

Since there is no road directly heading south, we first went to the city of Wad Madaniyy (ود مدني) and then to the town al-Manāqil (المناقل), which is about 20 km north of the confluence point. From there we followed sandy tracks until we reached the confluence point just outside the village al-Muḥayrībā (المحيريبا).

We were very happy to have reached the confluence point before sunset. We found the confluence on harvested agricultural land just 80 m from the track. There are just some dried stubbles from last year’s harvest. It appears that this season there are no crops planted and no land is irrigated.

Now we had a long drive back to Khartoum (5 hours). We stopped in al-Manāqil for dinner and reached Khartoum at midnight.

CP Visit Details:

  • Distance of car parking: 80 m
  • Time to reach the CP from the car: 1 minute
  • Time at the CP: 5:41 PM
  • Measured height: 426 m
  • Minimal distance according to GPS: 0 m
  • Position accuracy: 3 m
  • Topography: totally flat
  • Vegetation: currently no crops
  • Weather: sunny, 24° C (felt temperature)
  • Given Name: The Southern Sunset Confluence

The story finishes at 18°N 34°E.
