#1: The Confluence from 20 m distance

(visited by Rainer Mautz and Elionora)

13-Feb-2019 -- This is the last out of 3 reports reaching two new confluence points during our one-week trip to Sudan. The story starts from 15°N 33°E continues from 14°N 33°E.

From Khartoum, we used public transportation to visit the Nile Valley north of the capital. Using public busses, it is impossible to reach confluence points in the desert. Only this confluence is an exception: it is located at the outskirts of the small town Barbar (بربر) just 1.5 km from the Nile and 400 m from the main road.

From the city of ʿAṭbara (عطبرة) (36 km from the confluence) we took a local bus towards Barbar. After a ride of 45 minutes, we stopped the bus 2 km south of Barbar, got off and walked those remaining 400 m to the confluence, thereby crossing the railroad.

The confluence itself is deserted, but there are remains of agricultural cultivation from previous years. The confluence is surrounded by tarmac roads (which is quite special considering the few asphalted roads of Sudan). The nearest homes are those of nomads in 500 m distance.

We took the next bus back to ʿAṭbara and spent the night in the city. The next day we continued our trip to Karīma (كريمة) to see the famous Jabal al-Barkal (جبل البركل).
