#1: The Confluence from 10 m Distance

(visited by Rainer Mautz)

17-Jul-2019 -- This is the last out of eight reports reaching or attempting confluence points during a 2-week bicycle trip around Iceland. The story starts at 65°N 20°W and continues from 66°N 15°W.

Two days after my previous visit, I started from the town Eglistadir “very late” at 7:40 AM (normally I started a 5 AM), but I waited until the rain would stop.

Unfortunately, the rain continued once I was on the road, getting heavier and heavier. Soon I was completely wet even though I had lots of layers of clothing including an all-over raincoat.

The confluence is on the “Vattarnes” Peninsular just 750 m from the coastal road. This part of the road is not sealed and is constructed like a track for a roller-coaster with useless steep ups and downs. Well, I finally reached the nearest point to the confluence, parked my bicycle there and began my wet stroll to the zero location.

I traversed a couple of streams and had partially to hike through dense and high growing bushes (unfortunately being very wet). At the confluence is also a little stream and the ground is densely covered with a low-growing mix of herbs, flowers, moss and lichen.

I am not sure if it always exists, but I discovered a huge waterfall about 150 m from the confluence point. On the return, I made a little deviation to explore it.

After the visit, I continued the coastal road and spent the night in a guesthouse “Ejolfsstadir” far from any town. The next day – my last cycling day on this trip – I reached the town Höfn on the south-east coast. This was exactly the town where I finished my bicycle trip in the previous year coming from the south-coast. So I had completed a round around the island.
