#1: The Confluence from 10 m Distance

(visited by Rainer Mautz)

13-May-2022 -- We walked 1900 km from Zurich to Croatia to visit this confluence point as part of our hike network. On our stage from Rijeka to Split, the confluence was only 2 km off from our hiking route such that I couldn’t resist to have a look.

On confluence day, we started hiking from the village Bogatnik, which has now 2 inhabitants. Many of the villages in the hinterland have lost inhabitants or are completely deserted. We hiked 25 km until we reached the confluence area at 2 PM. It was an extremely hot day and it was difficult to get food or even water. Due to the cast geology, there is no surface water and as there are hardly any people living in the area, water was also hard to get.

Nevertheless, I made these 4 extra kilometres to visit this confluence point. I hid my backpack in a bush and ran two kilometres along the main road D59. From there, I followed a track for about 600 m and the remaining 60 m I crossed a meadow. But be aware, that cross country walking is not a good idea. We saw several times warning signs of landmines on our hike.

The confluence is beautifully located on a little meadow full with flowers and various bushes. There is a small overhead powerline nearby.

After the visit I ran back the same way that I had come, grabbed my backpack and another half an hour later I had caught up with Eleonora, who didn’t want to make a deviation to the confluence as we were already running out of water and food. We continued hiking for another 20 km until we reached the village Razvode where we spent the night. Three days later we reached Croatia’s second largest city Split, which has very well preserved Roman buildings.
