#1: Mature Oak - near the real point

(visited by David Coombs)

04-Mar-2024 -- While my wife was presenting at a conference in Austin I decided to visit the nearest CP.

Normally I am rather wary of visiting points in the USA due to the reputation of landowners to shoot first and ask questions later. But the point had been visited 3 times without incident so I decided to give it a go.

I drove to the nearest point on Raymond Road - just west of the CP and went to see if there was anyone home at the nearby houses to ask permission. With nobody around I headed off for the short walk and dance.

However, my GPS told me I had 2kms to walk. This was surprising but I thought no more about it and carried on passed mature oak trees (photo 1 and as reported by Joseph Kerski) through fields, fences, ditches, and undergrowth.

Still surprised I finally reached the point marked on my GPS and took the photos - including photo 1 of the GPS itself (photo 2). I did not even realize then that I had set up the GPS to visit 30N and 96 59W - a minute east of the true point!

I decided to walk out north to the FM153 saving a lot of wear and tear of me and my clothes but a very large gate and fence stood between me and the road (photo 2) and I only just managed to squeeze through where it crossed a ditch. Fortunately, no irate landlords were around and the road was very quiet. This all seemed like harder work than planned but it was only when I got back to the hotel that I saw my mistake and the reason for the long, fruitless expedition! My track shows that I was 200 metres from the point at "closest approach" What an idiot! Lesson Learned ?? - probably not!
