#1: Looking North

(visited by Gordon Spence)

01-Feb-2002 -- A three and a half hour flight from San Jose, CA and I am in Austin, TX apart from a layover in Dallas for a couple of hours, my first time in the Lone Star state.

A quick stop at the Texaco gas station to pick up some maps and then onto 71E out towards La Grange. Quite a nice scenic drive...I turned left onto a small county route and came to Plum Park - run by the Lower Colorado River Authority. Unfortunately all it led to was the Colorado river with no crossing.

Back to 71 and back track to another county route, over some railtracks to a locked gate beyond which were oil pumps. I saw a couple of guys surveying who told me that to cross the Colorado I would have to go east until I came to 77N, then turn back on 153E - about 10 miles down the road...

153E is signed as a "Farm Road" but it is a better road than a lot of the main roads back home. I found the house that the previous visitor referred to. The same lady still lives there, I showed her the report of the previous visit, to which the reply was "I'm going to ask a few more questions this time". We had a chat for a while and I was reminded to shut any gates behind me - I live in the country at home so I am always careful.

Through a couple of gates and a couple of fields - in the distance I could see the owner four fields away in search of some cows....I soon found the point and shot off the "on the exact spot",accuracy and elevation pictures (Pic 5). Looking North was a nice stand of trees.

We are definitely in cactus country, oh yes and gas country as well. The panoramic sweep runs from West to East looking North from the confluence point.

Three down in my American tour and onto the next one - an unvisited point - 29N 98W
