#1: The Confluence from 10m Distance

(visited by Rainer Mautz)

08-Jul-2024 -- This is the 4th out of 10 reports visiting confluence points during a 10-day bicycle trip from Rovaniemi to the Norwegian Sea and back. The story starts from 67°N 26°E and continues from 69°N 27°E.

In contrast to Hermann Grebner I approached the confluence from the South-East. At 69°55'32.0"N 27°05'58.8"E, I spotted on the satellite image a track that leads to a couple of remote mountain huts. I took that track with my bicycle and I can say, that this was tough mountain biking, full of steep grades, big potholes, huge puddles, big rocks. I should say, that it had rained cats and dogs just before I started the attack on this point.

After riding for 7 km on that track, I reached the huts. Nobody was present at the time of my visit. I parked my bicycle and began my hike with a straight distance of 4 km. The hike was mostly fine – of course I had to wade through the swamps and moors, and I also had to cross a quite rapid river.

With its altitude of 337 m, the confluence appears to be above the treeline. Besides some tiny blueberry bushes and grass, there is not much vegetation. But bird-lovers would have their pleasure here.

After the visit, I took another route back to my bike, but it was similarly swampy. Back on the main highway, another rainstorm was coming up. I decided to only ride back to the village Utsjoki, which is just 3 km across the river Karasjohka on the Finish side. There I took a cabin for the night.
