#1: The Confluence from 30m Distance

(visited by Rainer Mautz)

12-Oct-2024 -- This is the 3rd out of 3 reports visiting confluence points during a trip to the UK for an extended weekend. The story starts from 53°N 2°W and continues from 53°N 3°W.

Just before noon, I reached Blaenau Ffestiniog, an interesting town in the slate mountains just 6 km east of the confluence point. However, this confluence requires a longer hike for a visit. I could have driven 2.5km closer to the confluence, but since I anyway wanted to make a hike, I simply started hiking from the town centre. The weather was great, no wind and sunny. If I only would have had a look at the weather forecast….

You can park your car at the parking lot on Cwmortin Road in 3.5 km distance to the confluence point. From there you hike through the slate mountains uphill thereby passing former queries and lot of ruins from the times where they harvested slate plates here. After several steps upwards ascending about 300m in height, you reach the moor. If the weather is great, this is a wonderful hike. You will find the confluence point just 20 m from a moor lake. Unfortunately, a storm with rain and heavy winds came up after I started my hike. The rainstorm ended just before returning to town and when I reached my car, it got sunny again. This is Wales!

After the visit, I made my way back to “England”. The next day I returned my car at Heathrow and flew back to Zurich.
