We left Tandil after lunch and took the route 30, a while later we arrive to De La Canal, a small rural town. The 30 km that separate Tandil and De La Canal were the scene, in 1872, of one of the most tragic hate crimes in Argentine history, when a horde of criminals, encouraged by a supposed healer who called himself Tata Dios, murdered every immigrant they found along the way. The death toll was 36, including women and children.

Returning our simple and quiet trip, we returned to route 30 and bit later we were in the zone of next town, Egaña. We left the car on the side of the route and walked behind a gate, to visit the confluence 37S 59W, at only 200 meters of the route.

It is really easy to reach the confluence, but the last meters (out of the internal way) was in a grazing field, very muddy due to the heavy rains of the last few days. We decided to record the point aproximate at 50 meters of the zero.

Regarding Egaña (the very small town near the confluence), I can mention that it has a castle a couple of kilometers from the town (and about 15 km from the confluence). With 77 rooms and 14 bathrooms, it’s immersed in a peaceful, rural setting, like a striking appendage on the Pampas plains. It belonged to Eugenio Dias Velez, who never got to see it because, in 1930, when everything was being prepared for its inauguration and while guests and family were waiting at the castle, instead of the owner arrived, they received the news of his death in Buenos Aires city, 300 km away. It was abandoned for decades, then in the 1960s it served as an orphanage, but tragedy struck again when the manager was murdered by one of the former orphans. These events prompted some to tell ghosts stories. The fact is that, in recent years, after decades of neglect, there has been a movement by nearby residents to keep its history alive and fight for its appreciation. While I didn’t visit it on this trip, I was able to explore it on two other occasions (2013 and 2024). I attach a photo of my last trip, October/2024.

Salimos de Tandil luego del almuerzo y siguiendo la ruta 30, al rato visitamos la pequeña localidad de De La Canal. Los 30 kilómetros que separan ambas localidades fueron escenario, en 1872, de uno de los peores crímenes de odio de la historia argentina, cuando una horda salvaje instigada por un supuesto curandero que se hacía llamar Tata Dios salió a los caminos a asesinar a cuanto inmigrante se le cruce, matando a 36 personas, incluyendo mujeres y niños.

Volviendo a la simpleza y tranquilidad de nuestro paseo, retomamos la ruta 30 y pocos kilómetros más adelante, antes de llegar a la siguiente localidad (Egaña), visitamos la confluencia 37S 59W, a apenas 200 metros de la ruta.

La confluencia es de muy fácil conquista. Existe una tranquera y luego un camino interno en un campo de pastoreo, que nos dejó a aproximadamente 50 metros del cero. Dadas las fuertes lluvias de los últimos días, fuera del camino había mucho barro por lo que decidimos registrar el punto sin buscar el cero.

Sobre Egaña (la muy pequeña localidad cercana a la confluencia), puedo mencionar que cuenta con un castillo a un par de kilómetros del casco urbano (y a unos 15 km de la confluencia). Con 77 habitaciones y 14 baños e inmerso en un entorno tranquilo y rural, es como un apéndice llamativo en las llanuras pampeanas. Perteneció a Eugenio Diaz Velez quien no llegó a conocerlo ya que, corriendo el año 1930, cuando todo se dispuso para su inauguración y mientras los invitados y familiares aguardaban en el castillo, en lugar de llegar el propietario llegó la noticia de su fallecimiento en la ciudad de Buenos Aires a 300 km de distancia. Quedó abandonado por décadas, luego en los años 60 sirvió de orfanato, pero nuevamente la tragedia tiñó el lugar, cuando el administrador fue asesinado por uno de los antiguos huérfanos. Estos antecedentes empujaron a algunos a contar historias de fantasmas. Lo concreto es que, en los últimos años, luego de décadas de abandono, existe un movimiento de vecinos para mantener viva su historia y pelear por una puesta en valor. Si bien en este viaje no lo visité, en otras dos oportunidades (2013 y 2024) pude recorrerlo, adjunto una foto tomada en mi última visita, octubre 2024.
