01-Jun-2026 -- Visiting this ‘forgotten’ Degree Confluence Point (last visited more than 20 years ago) was a treat! Driving north from Boise, Idaho, I left I-84 to take US-95 through the rustic towns of Payette, Weiser, and Cambridge. Then past the Brownlee Reservoir, crossing the Snake River into Oregon. Past Oxbow, I turned north onto highway 39 (the Hell's Canyon scenic route), and then left onto a gravel/dirt forest road (NF-3990). Driving gingerly up this steep forest road, I eventually reached a junction with another forest road - at [44.97803,-116.99674], 1.53 miles ('as the crow flies’) from the point. As this forest road was strewn with small rocks, I parked here, and switched to riding my mountain bike.
After a ride of 4.4 miles, and an elevation gain of about 1,300 feet, the forest road passed just 300 feet ENE of the point. I stashed my bike, and hiked up a hillside to reach the point, which lies on the edge of a large clearing. As I approached the point, I disturbed a large brown grouse-like bird that was nesting on the ground nearby.
The views from ground level were scenic, but the ‘drone’s-eye’ views from 120m above the point were even better. To the East, you could see the edge of Hell's Canyon, and to the Northwest, you could see snow-covered, 8,643’ Cornucopia Peak. Here is a remote-controlled aerial video of this confluence point.
