18-Feb-2001 -- The confluence is in an off-road racing area in the desert east of Reno, NV. During our visit we had to negotiate not only the dirt roads leading to the site, but the myriad of off-road motorcycles racing around us. Luckily the race course did not include the site itself.
It has snowed the days before our trip and we did not know what to expect as far as ground conditions, so we packed up our gear (jackets, extra socks, extra shows, shovels, first aid kit, food, water, GPS -- packing light, we left the laptops behind) and headed out soon after daybreak.
The night before, we programmed our course into our GPS receivers (believing in backups, we took two), so reaching the confluence was a simply matter of following directions. The road took us within a third of a mile of our goal, and the overland trek to the actual point was a easy stroll through flat, low brush.
