#1: Picture of confluence.

(visited by Brent Bolen)

07-Jul-2001 -- I had tried for this confluence in May, but didn't have the time or ground clearance to reach it. When I found I had some more time to spend, I hopped into my truck and headed for Winnemucca. The California Highway Patrol was so impressed with my determination to log this confluence they gave me a citation (lesson learned: the radar detector doesn't do much good unless it is turned on). The last 18 miles from Winnemucca are unpaved, but most of it is fast going since it is smooth. After leaving the good dirt road, I followed a pole line road, which looked better in the aerial photo, for a couple of miles (this is where the ground clearance came in). I was able to drive within a mile and a half of the confluence. Fortunately, the heat of the past week had dissipated, and it was still early in the day. The walking was slightly hilly, with nothing but rocks and sage brush on the ground. I found the confluence most of the way up the second ridge after leaving the truck.

Picture # 1 shows the spot, with my tripod marking the confluence. Picture # 2 is of the GPS at the confluence; it is out of focus because I forgot to press the macro button (lesson learned: they put the LCD on the camera for a reason other than raising the price, use it). Picture # 3 is another picture of the spot on the ground that happens to lie at 42.0000 North and 118.000 West. Picture # 4 is a panorama to the east and south from the confluence. Picture # 5 is an antelope standing at the side of the road as I was driving back to Winnemucca. A second antelope was camera shy, and is hiding behind a bush on the left.
